Christina Zentkowska’s photographs fall into two categories: those which through digital manipulation re-present the familiar, and those which through framing present the world as unfamiliar. To look afresh is the challenge.
Her interest in photography was initially sparked by a life long interest in gardening, flowers and plants which she inherited from her father.
Her most recent work includes a series of abstract images called ‘Wired’ which explores configurations of everyday objects, in this case, kebab sticks.
Through digital manipulation the ordinary becomes extraordinary - richly translucent and other-worldly.
Her ‘Depths’ series explores the tension between the revealed and the hidden. The translucency of the windows, through which the photographs were taken, transform the ‘real’ world beyond into another element. The viewer is drawn into the misty depths.
Digital technology has liberated Zentkowska in two ways. Firstly, the power of the technology allows a prolific number of images to be stored and then selected or deleted. This means less censoring in the act of photo taking. Secondly, software, which allows manipulation, introduces a whole new area of exploration along with an element of the unknown and the serendipitous.
