Julia Brooker wants her paintings to "concentrate both my and the viewer's eye on the surface of paint.
I have been determined to eliminate the superfluous; - my paintings contain only the essentials, they are pared down, they are not cluttered with the inconsequential.
Paint is sumptuous: it is loaded with colour, it is soft and supple. Paint has a bloom when it is thick and is translucent when it is stretched across a surface. I want my paintings to be beautiful; so that people will stop and look, and for a moment, forget everything else. My paintings are dramatic yet subtle, I don't want everything to be seen from a distance. Closeness should offer up more, a desire to touch the surface.
I work on aluminium so that my paintings seem as if they are floating, they are as thin as possible. On this light reflective surface, I use paint as a transparent or incomplete veil. The smooth metallic surface makes every little move or hesitation apparent, and I am very aware of the fine distinctions in making the brush marks. In response to this, the colours I use are often muted."
Julia Brooker graduated with a first class honours degree in Fine Art from Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in 2000.
