Kate Westbrook moved to South Devon in 1993. Since then she has concentrated on drawing and painting the landscape within walking distance of her studio, the Erme Estuary and sea and cliffs near Mothecombe, and since moving in 2004, the town and coastline of Dawlish. As well as painting in oil on canvas, Kate also works in gouache, charcoal or pastel on paper. Working from pencil and watercolour sketches and 'notes' of the subject, the oil painting is planned and the sketches are transferred to canvas using a grid. The walls of the studio are always full of watercolour sketches - references for work in progress.

Kate has become increasingly concerned with capturing the interaction between the elements and the landscape. She characterises her relationship with the Devon landscape as one of "confrontation” - in which the drive is to communicate the physicality of being outdoors - the sun, rain, wind etc. - the long lines disrupting the surface, are a manifestation of this. Kate's work is a very personal and dramatic interpretation of a landscape known well and loved.

Kate has exhibited in the USA, mainland Europe and the United Kingdom and has works in private collections all over the world.

In 1974 she joined the Mike Westbrook Band and has the dual career of painter and musician. She has performed all over Europe and as far afield as the far east and the U.S.A. As a singer-songwriter she is featured on 20 albums, and she has worked in theatre, radio and T.V.
