My work begins with place. Locations are selected for their familiarity or chosen by
tracing where my ancestors worked and came from. Sketches and drawings made in situ are later photocopied, dissected and manipulated in the studio as precursors to the final image, etched direct into zinc plates. I enjoy and am fascinated by experimentation with etching processes and materials such as sand, earth and glue and with hand- and machine-tools. My physical connection to the whole process of making - which is often vigorous and dynamic - is extremely important. The plates are repeatedly treated with acid, enabling me to build up layers of line quality
and deep tonal value which is further emphasised by making new ink mixes. My working strategy is playful, allowing the images to change in their making as they become layered with new surfaces and new ideas.
West is a series of etchings and collagraphs on zinc, based entirely on the most southerly vicinities of South Devon, in particular the environs in and around Beesands, the birthplace of my Grandfather and many family members. I collected simple drawn imagery directly from fields, tractor marks, boundaries, coastlines, hay bales and other debris.
The locations allow me to explore a physical response to landscape and combine
questions of belonging, rootedness, liminality and home. The boundaries of both
landscape and family. The space between us.
My work combines many private explorations with public discourses that aim to sharesomething of how I view and experience the world around me.
