Ray Malone produces beautiful abstract paintings as part of a consistent enquiry into
the nature and process of perception. The "untitled" series of yellow and black
paintings characteristically combines his interest in expressive mark-making, dynamic
colour contrasts and richness of surface detail with a search for formal coherence.
While in the "Unbound" series, using acrylic paint and charcoal, he manages to produce deeply contemplative pieces, the result of a combination of an unusual depth of colour and the simplest of formal structures.
"For me" he says, "painting is neither a particular method, nor any one set of
techniques. Nor is it necessarily "about" any one thing. It's possible that it is all or any
of the things that at one time or another have been claimed for it, but it's also possible
that it is none of them. "Whatever its purpose or significance, for me it is, above all
else, a mode of enquiry, a way of asking questions: about what we see, and what there is to be seen"
Malone's more specific interest lies in the very particular relationship between the
so-called pictorial space of the painting and the real space in which the painted object
finds its "home". "In trying to answer the questions this interest raises" he says,"I'm committed to using whatever forms or techniques present themselves, and remainingas open as I can to all possibilities"
Apart from an A-level art course at school from 1955-57, and an experimental course
at the Working Men's College in London in 1990-91, the artist is entirely self-taught.
He has exhibited widely in the U.K. including all the major London art fairs, and has
paintings in public and private collections here and in private collections in the
Bahamas, France, Germany, Greece, and the U.S.A.
